Meet Skeat, your Flinders Business ambassador

Flinders Business Adelaide

Meet Skeat Yu, a Master of Business (International Business) graduate from Flinders Business at Flinders University. Originally from China, Skeat chose to study in Australia to complete his Masters.

Internationally recognised

He chose Flinders because of its reputation, specifically Flinders Business being the first South Australian university to receive the AMBA (Association of MBAs) accreditation. It is one of only three Business Schools in Australia with this internationally recognised ranking.

Skeat was also drawn to Flinders University after discovering fellow countryman Junling Liu – co-founder and chairman of 111, one of China’s biggest online drugstores – is a Flinders Business alumnus.

No. 1 in Australia in Business & Management for overall experience The Good Universities Guide 2020 – overall quality of educational experience (postgraduate)

The Master of Business covers the fundamentals of business – economics, sustainability, finance, and marketing – and offers specialist elective subjects including managing negotiations, supply chain management, HR recruitment, performance management, and consumer behaviour. It’s no wonder that Flinders Business is No. 1 in South Australia in Accounting and Economics for overall experience and teaching quality (The Good Universities Guide 2019).

Real-world experience

Throughout his course, Skeat and his classmates have been exposed to multiple real-life case studies. With a dream of being a business consultant, he found these case studies to be incredibly useful to his professional development.

The Flinders University Work Experience Program provided Skeat with work experience while studying. The program gives the business community access to enthusiastic volunteers preparing for their careers. While studying, Skeat has volunteered as a consultant and worked as a marketing specialist for a bicycle company. It’s safe to say he has been taking all opportunities available to him.

Living in Adelaide

One of Skeat’s favourite things about Adelaide is the people. “People in Adelaide are really nice, you receive a smile and greeting everywhere you go, and strangers are happy to help when you are in need. After a few months, you will realise that Adelaide has rubbed off on you and changed you for the better,” he says.

Skeat also works as a freelance street photographer, and Adelaide is the perfect place for him to develop his portfolio. Known as the festival city of Australia, there are endless events and opportunities to photograph. “Adelaide is a great city to make your new home. It hosts events like the Tour Down Under, Royal Adelaide Show, and Adelaide Fringe. Attending these events helped me to balance study and my social life, and were fun – especially given the warm Adelaide weather. If you choose to study in Australia, Adelaide is the place to be,” he says.

Skeat’s advice to students thinking of studying with Flinders Business is to “…think first, ask second. Choosing to move across the world is a big deal, but it’s worth it.”
