“I chose public health because I want to make a positive impact on people’s lives beyond individual patient care.”

Inspired by his time studying Pharmacy and volunteering with the National Service Scheme in his home country of India, Manan developed a passion for disease prevention and improving the health and wellbeing of communities. This inspired him to pursue a career focused on creating positive change at a broader level, ultimately leading him to study a Master of Public Health at Flinders University.

“Public health excites me because it combines science, research, and policy to address issues such as chronic diseases, health inequalities, and global health challenges,” he says.

With a strong reputation in health sciences, practical approach to learning and supportive environment for international students, he knew Flinders would be the right choice to transition into this study area and begin his journey in creating healthier and more equitable communities across the globe.

The Master of Public Health course at Flinders takes place over 2 years full time and covers key areas such as health promotion, biostatistics, health economics and more. Among Manan’s favourite topics have been Critical Perspectives on Global Health and Development, Social Determinants of Health and Evaluation of Public Health. These subjects have allowed him to connect theory with practical, evidence-based learning and develop a deeper understanding of the complex factors that influence the health of communities.

“These subjects have broadened my understanding of how social, economic, and environmental factors influence health, as well as the importance of evaluating public health programs to ensure they create meaningful outcomes,” he says.

Beyond the course content itself, Manan has particularly appreciated the collaborative learning environment at Flinders.

“I also value the interactive tutorials and group discussions, where I have learned from classmates with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.”

For Manan, learning alongside people with different experiences and perspectives has added another dimension to his studies, while approachable and supportive lecturers have helped him build confidence and develop practical skills that he can take into his future career in public health.

Finding Balance in Adelaide

“What I enjoy most about Adelaide is that it has the perfect balance between a busy city and a small town, it is peaceful and calm, without the heavy traffic and fast-paced lifestyle of larger cities, yet it still has everything I need.”

For Manan, Adelaide offered the best of both worlds when choosing where to study. He wanted a city with reliable public transport, shopping, restaurants and plenty to do, while still having a relaxed atmosphere where he could unwind outside of his studies. Consistently ranked among the world’s most liveable cities*, Adelaide provided the lifestyle he was looking for, with the space to study, explore and build a community.

That same sense of calm was an important part of Manan’s experience at Flinders’ Bedford Park campus.

“One of the things I like most about Flinders is the campus environment. I often study in the library because it’s quiet, comfortable, and has everything I need for assignments and exam preparation. The Student Hub has also been helpful whenever I have had questions or needed support. I also enjoy walking around the campus because it’s surrounded by greenery and has a peaceful atmosphere,” he says.

For Manan, Flinders has provided a place where he can focus on his studies, access the support he needs and feel at home in his surroundings.

For international students like Manan, the overall student experience and sense of belonging can often shape their time studying abroad. Having a strong support system at university has been pivotal in shaping his experience and providing opportunities to engage.

“The International Student Services team has been very supportive and has made it easier to settle into university life by providing guidance and organising helpful events. I would highly recommend attending Orientation Week because it’s a great opportunity to meet new people, make friends, and learn more about the university, its services, and student clubs,” says Manan.

The connections he has made have been just as important as what he has learned in the classroom. Studying alongside classmates from different countries has introduced him to new perspectives and cultures, while the inclusive atmosphere at Flinders has helped make his experience as an international student both enjoyable and rewarding.

“Building friendships and finding opportunities takes time, so be patient, stay positive, and make the most of the support and opportunities Flinders offers.”

For international students considering their next step, Manan’s experience is a reminder that university is about more than earning a qualification. It is also about finding your community, trying new things and making the most of the experiences that come with studying in a new country.
