Originally from Bangladesh, Mohammad’s journey to Flinders University was driven by the importance of finding an institution that offered a Diploma that would lead directly into a bachelor’s degree of his chosen field, Information Technology.

Mohammad’s journey began at Flinders University Academy, a direct pathway into the destination degree of your choice, where he successfully completed a Diploma in Information Technology.
Mohammad didn’t always recognise his passion for Information Technology and Cybersecurity, but as he progressed through his studies at the Academy, he found an interest in systems and how they work, ultimately leading him to choosing a career in Cybersecurity.
“When I first started, I did not have everything figured out. I just knew I liked tech and wanted to know build a future in it.”
Now in the second year of his Bachelor of Information Technology, majoring in Cybersecurity and Networking Systems, Mohammad credits his experience at Flinders University Academy with helping to shape where he is today.
“My experience at Flinders University Academy was really good. The practical learning, the supportive lecturers and the pathway it provided all helped shape where I am today.”

Describing the campus as comfortable and relaxed, and he particularly values the Student Hub, which provided the guidance and support needed to make his transition to university life smooth and enjoyable.

Beyond the classroom, Mohammad appreciates the central location of the city campus. Located in the heart of Adelaide and adjacent to the Adelaide Railway Station, the Flinders City Campus provides students with the opportunity to experience the city’s lively atmosphere while remaining well connected.
“When you need a break from studies there is always something to do around the campus which creates a balance.”
“Because I am at the city campus there are many restaurants, cafes and places to hang out nearby.”
Life in Adelaide as an International Student
Known for its relaxed lifestyle and friendly community, Mohammad quickly settled into life in Australia, making close friends who became an important part of his journey.
“It is easy to settle in. Overtime I made some really good friends and Adelaide started to feel like home.’’
When he isn’t studying, Mohammad is grateful for the liveliness of the Adelaide city, knowing there is always something exciting happening or a new café or restaurant to try.
“The city is very vibrant and there is always something to do when I take a break from study.”

“The learning is very hands on and practical. I am not just sitting in lectures and memorizing things, I am actually doing things and building real skills.”
In particular, the 12-week industry-based practicum was crucial to Mohammad gaining real life experience in the field of IT, and something he says really sets Flinders University apart from other institutions.
“I think [the 12-week industry-based practicum] is a huge advantage because students get real experience in their actual field of study before graduating.”

Relocating to a new country can be both exciting and challenging, especially on your own. For Mohammad, the support he received from the Flinders University Academy played an important part in helping him settle into his new life.

For Mohammad, this made the transition to university feel natural, giving him the confidence and preparation needed to succeed in his studies.

Where to next?
Mohammad hopes to return to Bangladesh taking everything he’s learnt, and the connections he’s made, to build a prosperous career in the Cybersecurity industry. Not only does he strive for a future working in large, multinational companies, but has set a goal to eventually start a company of his own.
“My dream is to work in Data Centres or as a Cybersecurity Specialist in big telecom and IT firms. I want to reach very high designation in these companies one day. I also aim to eventually start something of my own.”
