Fridays at the Library: The Opening up of Terra Australis

On Saturday 9th October 2010 a one-day conference was held in the National Museum of the Royal Navy, Portsmouth, to commemorate the bicentenary of the return of Matthew Flinders to England after having circumnavigated Terra Australis. UK Naval researcher Peter Ashley, the conference’s convenor, will summarise the wide-ranging presentations from the conference, including the history of the Royal Society and accounts of the contributions of such prominent figures as James Cook, Joseph Banks, the Earl of Sandwich, Arthur Phillip, John Hunter and, of course, Matthew Flinders.
