Radical Stories: The History of Flinders’ Empire Times Magazine

From its very first editorial in 1969, Empire Times has proudly numbered among Australia’s most radical, creative, and forward-thinking student magazines. In the 40th year of its existence, this special panel discussion brings three former Empire Times editors together to reflect on the magazine’s history, politics, and culture.

Andrew McHugh came to Flinders University in 1972. He was editor from 1973 to 1975 and has stayed at Flinders University for more than 40 years. Since co-editing Empire Times in 1982, Veronika Petroff has gone on to work as a journalist in the mainstream media, lecturer in journalism and in a number of communication roles in the public sector. Dr Tanya Lyons was the editor in 1992, the “Year of the Men’s Edition”, and is currently a senior lecturer in the School of International Studies at Flinders University.
