2023 MDRS students welcomed to rural SA campuses this week

In the Greater Green Triangle, staff and students welcomed their 2023 cohort.  The week included clinical skills, presentations around what to expect in 2023, checking out their future accommodation, Advanced Studies opportunities and joining the interns for their weekly tutorial and a surgical case of the month with the year three MDRS students. The students also toured the clinics, took a trip to Hamilton to visit the clinic and Hospital with a stopover at Wannon Falls.

The Victor Harbor campus was a buzz of energy when the Hills Mallee Fleurieu 2023 students visited.   They really engaged with the programme of events and found enormous benefits in visiting the local medical clinics and regional towns, providing them a clear insight to what their year three will entail.  Students expressed great enthusiasm and excitement for year ahead when they embark on placement in an environment where they can put their current knowledge and skills to task, further increase their skills and knowledge, while being highly supported by both Clinicians and Flinders Staff.

In the Riverland, students toured the region to visit each of the major town hospitals and clinics to assist in their decision making for where they might like to spend their third year placement next year. After spending time with current MDRS students and meeting with staff and local GP supervisors the resounding feedback was that they will be happy no matter which town they are based in and that they can’t wait for the opportunity to study in the Riverland next year.

Feedback from students who visited the Barossa included: “I had a lot of questions answered that I have been thinking about, it was so good to hear about how a typical week would look in a rural placement, hearing about the transition from classroom to clinic and the current 3rd year student experiences in clinics, hospitals and community was really beneficial”.

They were involved in Advanced Studies discussions, collaborate tutorials, information sessions with the current year three students, a diabetes simulation and visits to the four medical centres in the region of where they may be placed next year.  The 2023 cohort also had the opportunity to network, having dinner with the current MDRS and University of Adelaide students at a local hotel.  One student said, “it was so good to see how the 3rd Years have developed and progressed in confidence.”
