Point of Care Ultrasound Workshop for Doctors of East Arnhem Land

Flinders Rural and Remote Health NT (RRH NT), NT Regional Training Hub (NT RTH), and Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine ASUM teamed up to offer a Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) workshop in Nhulunbuy from the 12th to 14th of May 2023.

The workshop was an excellent opportunity for doctors to expand their knowledge of PoCUS or begin their journey into this field.

With the workshop spanning three days, there was ample time to cover a range of topics, including eFast, vascular access, soft tissue, nerve blocks, DVT, gallbladder, liver, renal, lung, and AAA. 18 doctors were in attendance with feedback already received from participants using their newly acquired skills on patients in the Emergency Department for upper limb vein work at Gove District Hospital.

The workshop was led by Dr Nadi Pandithage and supported by Dr Justine Miller and local Sonographers Ms Liz Jarvis and Ms Andrea Laracy who provided hands-on training for the participants. The workshop aims to empower doctors with the confidence to perform PoCUS effectively and efficiently. With the help of this training program, doctors can take a significant step towards improving patient outcomes by accurately diagnosing and treating patients in a timelier manner.

Australian Indigenous Doctors Association (AIDA) had 17 SRC representatives take part in NT PHN Highschool to Health Program in East Arnhem and they too had an opportunity to undertake some PoCUS training during their immersive visit.
