Hannah uncovers a love of laboratory medicine

Embarking on a journey to pursue a career in Medical Science, Hannah discovered her passion for laboratory work during her studies at Flinders University. The Bachelor of Medical Science provided her with a comprehensive foundation in human physiology, biochemistry, and human disease. However, it was the newly introduced Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine) that truly aligned with her career aspirations, allowing her to combine her interest in patient care with her love for scientific research.

Flinders was a standout choice for Hannah. From her first visit to Bedford Park as a high school student, the campus left a lasting impression.

“Flinders was the first university I ever went to on a high school excursion for career development, and it was that day, walking around the campus that I decided Flinders was the university for me.”

Its excellent reputation in Medicine and Medical Sciences and a commitment to providing an exceptional student experience further solidified her decision.

“The University is student-orientated and supports the growth and development of its students. The campus is full of student events, from sports in the Hub to lunchtime music and big events.”

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Hannah found her learning experience at Flinders to be rewarding. Passionate lecturers inspired her excitement for subjects like biochemistry of human diseases, immunology, virology, pathogenesis, haematology and blood transfusion sciences.

“Lecturers and coordinators expressed such passion when they spoke, which intrigued and excited me for what they had to say and teach.”

Practical placements were also a key component of Hannah’s learning experience in her fourth year of the Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine) program. The hands-on training prepared her for real-world laboratory settings.

“Throughout my placement, I continue to learn, develop new skills, enhance my knowledge, and prepare for what it is like to work in the field of laboratory medicine outside of university teachings.”

She also gained valuable experience as a laboratory assistant through the Summer Awards Scholarship, enhancing her understanding of teamwork and effective communication.

Looking ahead, Hannah is drawn to the field of transfusion science but remains open to other possibilities. She eagerly anticipates her upcoming placement in an immunology laboratory and finds satisfaction in contributing to diagnostic medicine.

Hannah’s experience at Flinders University has propelled her toward her career goals and ignited a passion for laboratory work. The comprehensive curriculum, engaging learning environment, practical placements, and supportive community have contributed to her growth as a budding scientist. She is well-prepared for a successful and fulfilling future in the medical field.
