MD Year 2 getting a taste of their 2024 MDRS year

This week the MD year two students taking part in the Rural Stream program visited their future campuses and communities.

At Victor Harbor, the Hills Mallee Fleurieu students participated in clinical skills, a wellness walk around Granite Island and presentations around what to expect in 2024.  All students have particularly enjoyed touring the regions medical clinics and Southern Fleurieu Health Service, meeting with practice managers and GP supervisors.

In the Riverland, as well as touring the region, their focus was to become familiarised with each of the clinics and the way the MDRS program is run so they can make informed decisions regarding site allocation process which will occur in the next few weeks.

Down in the Greater Green Triangle, students visited clinics and hospitals in Mt Gambier, Millicent and Naracoorte and Hamilton in western Victoria.  They participated in a clinical skills session with Clinical Educator Dr Amir the year 3 students presented on their experiences in the MDRS. Wednesday night, a dinner with the combined group of students was a chance for all to socialise and ask questions in a relaxed environment.

Students were kept busy in the Barossa with observing and getting some hands-on experience at the clinics.  Highlights included, assisting with skin biopsies, plastering, administering flu vaccines and visiting Swan Reach.

They shared a tutorial session with current year 3 students and a what to expect in 2024 with year 3’s, Program Administrator and Campus and Site Administrator. They then had the opportunity to go back into the four Barossa GP clinics for half or full days with GP’s to help with their allocation selections for 2024.

On Wednesday evening a dinner was held for all the students and some staff, a great opportunity to get to know each other while taking part in the local quiz night and WINNING!  Clinical Educator Dr Natalie Payne held a clinical skills session with the students on Thursday afternoon.

Across the regions, it was a successful week and the students are excited and looking forward to their 2024 rural experience.
