From storytelling to healing: Peter’s path to Medicine

Peter Lacey’s decision to pursue medicine was more than just a career choice—it was a journey of self-discovery, a commitment to service, and a bridge between healing traditions and modern healthcare. At the heart of his experience lies the Flinders University Indigenous Entry Stream (IES)*, a pathway program that not only welcomed Peter’s non-science background but also paved the way for him to make a meaningful impact on health outcomes.

Peter’s journalism studies and career in storytelling at the ABC were fulfilling, but he sensed something was missing.

“Then it hit me—I wanted to become a healer and really make a difference. The Indigenous Entry Stream (IES) came along like a golden ticket, connecting my strengths to a path that felt right.”

For Peter, medicine isn’t just about textbooks; it’s an opportunity to blend ancient healing practices with modern knowledge, celebrating his roots and striving for improved healthcare.

“It’s not just my dream; it’s a promise to really do something good and be of service to others that is more aligned with who I am.”

Despite not having a background in science, the IES program’s one-week immersion and subsequent 13-week intensive study provided a structured approach, offering a comprehensive understanding of core subjects. This not only fuelled Peter’s motivation for medicine but also allowed him the time to thoroughly evaluate and affirm his commitment to this career path.

“The support in this program is incredible, and people genuinely have your back 100%. It’s a big leap, especially if you don’t have a science background, but many before you have done it and succeeded.”

The immersive experience and intensive study regimen have laid a solid foundation, ensuring Peter was equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills for success. Having successfully completed the IES program in November, he looks forward to commencing studies with the rest of the medical cohort in February.
