Flinders Rural and Remote Health is proud to support health research in the Torres Strait in partnership with Torres Strait Islander leaders.

Prof Jaqui Hughes, who is recognised as a Kuike of Medicine of Wagadagam in the Torres Straits, leads Flinders’ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Advancement Clinical Research Program. One of the main projects is an all-community effort to bring dialysis care to Torres Strait Islands with local workforce delivering treatments.
In September, Prof Hughes and her team engaged with the Torres Strait community at the 2025 Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival to exchange health knowledge about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Advancement Projects. The team spoke about the project work within the Torres Strait seeking community feedback that could shape project outcomes. These included the Zenadh Health Science Research and Education Council and the Kikirriu Dan Walmai Project.

“To build our knowledge and reinforce our expertise as a community, we need to look for all positive ways to come together and learn from each other,” Prof Hughes said.
