“I never planned on becoming a doctor, but once I saw a path into medicine, everything changed.”
After finishing year 12, Jason Wilmot turned to something he already loved. “I enjoyed exercise, so I decided to try working for myself as a personal trainer,” he says. The decision paid off, and while running his business, the Alice Springs local completed a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science.
Finding purpose in medicine
Strong study results opened the door to the Northern Territory Medical Program at Flinders University, a pathway Jason had once thought impossible. “I would never have thought of it on my own, but once the idea was planted, it felt right,” he says. He was drawn to the challenge, the science and the human connection. “Ultimately, it feels like a privilege to help people when they are at their most vulnerable.”
A remote upbringing that shaped his path
Growing up in Alice Springs meant Jason had a strong sense of place and community. “I have done all my schooling here. Even most of my undergraduate degree was completed online from Alice,” he says. Remote living brought barriers, such as the cost of travel for exams and interviews, but it also strengthened his determination.
A unique learning experience in the NT
Jason says the NT Medical Program offered a level of support he had not expected. “The small cohort means you get to know the consultants on a first name basis,” he says. He also valued the strong focus on cross-cultural learning, as well as hands-on experiences. “The cadaver dissection sessions were an exceptional privilege.” A highlight was his elective at St Georges Hospital in London where he observed trauma surgery and later completed a marathon in Switzerland.
Looking forward to graduation
Jason plans to start his career in Alice Springs and Darwin before pursuing specialist training in orthopaedic or plastic surgery. With his graduation next month, he looks forward to celebrating with family and friends. “They are all flying to Darwin and I cannot wait to share the moment with them.”
