Physical Activity and Nutrition Down South

Recently a Community grant from Onkaparinga Council was awarded to Nutrition & Dietetics for a nutrition and physical activity research project at South Adelaide Football Club. Kathryn Jackson and Louisa Matwiejczyk from the Nutrition & Dietetics dept, will collaborate with Nadia Bevan from Education, and Dr. Lynda Norton from Health Sciences to encourage parents of the Under 16 and under 18 football players to participate in a healthy lifestyle project while waiting at the football club during their children’s football practice. The aim of this project is to improve fitness and healthy eating through fun activities. The nutrition component of the project will involve hands-on making of easy, tasty and nutritious snacks, to be consumed by the parents while waiting at training, and for their children to eat after training.

The approach is nutrition education through doing (experiential learning) for the parents, rather than classroom-type nutrition education lectures. The physical activity component will focus on participation rather than physical measurements. Parents and friends will be encouraged to join in a series of walks around the football club grounds and along nearby walking trails, to gradually increase fitness and well-being.
