Southgate PhD student Georgia Panagiotopoulos has been inspired to write poetry after interviewing over 40 Greek widows and widowers about ‘wellbeing in widowhood’ for her research. Georgia is investigating the impacts of social determinants of health over the lifecourse on health in older age among Greeks who emigrated to Australia aged in their early 20 and 30s and who have ‘aged in place’ here. She wrote her poem reflecting on her grandmother’s migratory experience and her experiences of widowhood in older age. Georgia was invited to present her poem at the opening of the 2nd International Conference on Ageing in a Foreign Land in Adelaide in June 2013, in the presence of the Ambassador for Greece. The poem has since been reprinted in several forums, including the newsletter of the Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Australia (http://www.fecca.org.au/images/ncan-news/ncan_news_july_2013.pdf#! – see page 8).
