Bryan Ho from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore undertaking an exchange at Flinders University during Semester 2 2024.
After spending almost my entire life in Singapore, I made the daunting decision to leave my home country and study on a new continent. With a leap of faith, I found myself at Flinders University! When I arrived in Adelaide, I felt like a blank canvas, unsure of what to expect since I had never lived overseas for an extended period before. To my surprise, I quickly connected with the friendly community, embraced the more relaxed pace of life, and enjoyed the stunning winter and spring weather. The natural beauty surrounding the Bedford Park campus made it even better.
Coming from a fast-paced city lifestyle, Adelaide offered a literal breath of fresh air. Unlike back home, people here regularly reach out to strangers with a helping hand. Growing up, I learned not to speak to strangers, so experiencing this kindness was both surprising and heartwarming. These gestures have made me appreciate my life in Australia even more.
Adelaide is full of exciting things to see and do, and I’m thankful to both the International Student Services (ISS) Team and the Flinders Hall Committee for helping me make the most of it. Thanks to the ISS, I fed kangaroos and other native animals at Cleland Wildlife Park and explored the charming German village of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. The Flinders Hall Committee has also kept things lively with fun events like mock wedding ceremonies and parties like Shark After Dark!
Flinders University’s facilities have also exceeded my expectations. With access to powerful workstations and cutting-edge virtual production sets, I can focus on my creative projects without worrying about technical issues.
Living in Adelaide and studying at Flinders has been an incredible experience. Two and a half months have flown by, but there’s still so much to see and do. While I stay busy with schoolwork, I plan to make the most of my free time to fully experience all that Adelaide has to offer!
Bryan was fortunate to be awarded a Destination Australia Cheung Kong Exchange Program Scholarship to support his exchange experience.
