Cultural Immersion and Academic Learning at Rajagiri, South India

Ayush from Flinders University, on a short term study tour – Networks and Cybersecurity Internship in Rajagiri, Semester 1 2025, supported through the New Colombo Plan.

Beyond the insightful academic sessions, the trip’s highlight was experiencing Kerala’s rich culture, cuisine, and hospitality—from the university staff and students to the local community. Learning about the historical influence of Portuguese and British presence on Kerala added a deeper dimension to the experience.

It was one of the most incredible experience of my life. I had always wanted to visit South India and indulge in the rich culture and local food. However, one of the main challenges was adapting to the weather, which I gradually became accustomed to. Communication was also a hurdle at first due to the local accent, but I overcame it by consciously emphasising my vowels and adjusting my speech, which made conversations much easier. Beyond that, the experience was highly rewarding, both academically and culturally.

I would recommend grabbing any overseas opportunity that comes your way, as it will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. Embrace the local culture and cuisine, even if it feels unfamiliar at first. Communication can be tricky, so try emphasising your vowels to make conversations easier, especially if English isn’t their first language. Most importantly, immerse yourself fully—both academically and culturally—as the experience will be truly rewarding.
