2023 Playford Trust Scholarship Program

Phase 1: Applications open 4 August 2022 and close 16 September 2022

 Playford Trust / Clean Seas Scholarship – 1 scholarship, $10,000 a year for two years (New in 2023)

For a student commencing third year of undergraduate studies and looking to undertake a fourth year of study in aquaculture. Applicants must be able to undertake paid work placements (a total of 8-10 weeks) in the summer vacations before their third- and fourth-year studies commence. Placements may be at the Clean Seas fish breeding and production facility in Arno Bay.

Playford Trust / Codan Scholarship – 1 $10,000 scholarship

For a student commencing third year, fourth year or Honours, studying electronic engineering, signal processing or physics and with an interest in sensing systems. The recipient will have the opportunity to undertake paid work experience.

Playford Trust / Nyrstar Scholarships – 4 scholarships, $10,000 a year for two years

For students commencing third year in chemical, mechanical or electrical engineering. Students must be able to undertake a paid work placement (8-12 weeks) at Nyrstar’s Port Pirie Smelter over the summer vacation. Placements take place before third year or fourth year studies commence.

Playford Trust / SA Power Networks – 1 $7,000 scholarship

For a student in their final year of electrical engineering studying in the field of power engineering or asset management. The recipient will have the opportunity to undertake work experience.

Playford Trust / WSP Engineering Scholarship – 1 $7,000 scholarship

For a student in Honours or fourth year civil, structural, mechanical or electrical engineering. Students must be able to complete a flexible work placement for up to six weeks.  The recipient will have the opportunity for an ongoing paid internship and future employment.

Playford Trust / AusIMM Minerals Industry Scholarships – 3 $9,000 scholarships

For students entering a full-time Honours year in geoscience or fourth year in mining engineering, chemical engineering (minerals processing) or environmental engineering. Scholarships are supported by the Adelaide branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM). Applications are made through the AusIMM Education Endowment Fund (EEF).

Phase 2: Applications open 13 October 2022 and close 20 January 2023 (unless otherwise specified)

Honours, third- and fourth-year scholarships  

Playford Trust Honours (University) Scholarships – ­12 $7,000 scholarships

In partnership with Flinders University, the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia, four scholarships are offered at each institution for Honours students studying in one of the Trust’s priority areas:

  • Advanced manufacturing and new technologies
  • Agriculture, aquaculture and food production
  • Water, energy and climate change
  • Space and defence technologies
  • Health sciences and associated new technologies
  • Mining and resources development

Honours scholarship recipients are not precluded from subsequently applying for a Playford Trust PhD scholarship. Similarly, students undertaking a MPhil and awarded an Honours scholarship will not be excluded from applying for a subsequent PhD scholarship.

Playford Trust / Aurecon Scholarship – 1 $10,000 scholarship

For a student commencing fourth year electrical engineering or a fourth or fifth year in electrical engineering and business/commerce, or a similar second degree. In recognition of Aurecon’s commitment to promoting gender equality, preference will be given to female applicants. The successful applicant will be guaranteed a work placement.

Playford Trust / Built Honours Scholarship – 1 $10,000 scholarship

New in 2023. For an Honours student in civil, structural or construction engineering.

Playford Trust / Coopers Honours Scholarship – 1 $7,000 scholarship

For an Honours student in barley breeding science or yeast fermentation.

Playford Trust / GSA Scholarship in Earth Sciences – 1 $5,000 scholarship

For an Honours student or equivalent in earth sciences. Supported by the Geological Society of Australia – South Australian Division.

Playford Trust / OZ Minerals – Minerals Industry Honours Scholarship – 1 $9,000 scholarship

For a student commencing Honours in geoscience, mining engineering or chemical engineering.

Playford Trust / Ultra Electronics Scholarship – 1 $10,000 scholarship

For a student commencing third or fourth year in electronic engineering, computer science, systems engineering or applied physics.  Includes a work placement opportunity. Ultra Electronics has a strong diversity program and the Trust encourages indigenous students and female students to apply.

Playford Trust Resources Industry Honours Scholarship – $10,000 scholarship

This is part of an industry and State government initiative recognising a national decline in the number of students studying petroleum and mining engineering. More information will be available in October.

PhD Scholarships

Playford Trust PhD Scholarships ­­– 2 scholarships, each $5,000 a year for 3½ years

These scholarships are intended to supplement an existing Australian Government Research Training Program Stipend Scholarship (RTPS) or similar institutional PhD stipend scholarship. A copy of the letter confirming one of these stipends must be supplied to the Trust before the scholarship can be awarded.

Applicants must be commencing research in one of the Trust’s priority areas:

  • Advanced manufacturing and new technologies
  • Agriculture, aquaculture and food production
  • Water, energy and climate change
  • Space and defence technologies
  • Health sciences and associated new technologies
  • Mining and resources development

First year scholarships

Playford Trust Rural Science and Engineering Scholarships ­– 6 $4,000 scholarships

These scholarships support students from rural South Australia who in moving to Adelaide to undertake undergraduate studies in science, engineering, mathematics or technology at one of the three South Australian universities.

Playford Trust / The Andy Thomas Space Foundation Scholarships

For high–achieving school leavers hoping to begin engineering studies at the University of Adelaide, with the aim of majoring in aerospace engineering. More information will be available in October. Applications close 16 December 2022.

Playford Trust Resources Industry ­Scholarships – Up to 20 scholarships – valued at $10,000 a year for 2 years.

For talented Year 12 STEM students hoping to study mining engineering or petroleum engineering at the University of Adelaide. The scholarships are part of an industry and State government initiative recognising a national decline in the number of students studying in these fields.

Playford Trust St Ann’s College Residential Scholarships – 3 $7,000 scholarships

For students intending to study science, engineering, mathematics or technology at one of the three South Australian universities.
