To celebrate Wellbeing Week 9-13 September, International Student Services has asked some of our international students what they do for self-care!
Rakshya Risal
My busy schedule unfolds as a long yet highly productive day. Each day in my life is a meticulously planned balance of studies, work, self-care, and engaging with my hobbies. My day begins with a moment of gratitude, checking in my meal (which I prepare the night before and pack each day), and then going through the goals for the day. My usual calendar includes a workout regimen, community service activities, academic commitments, meal preparation, and watching YouTube videos on health and well-being, all while making time to read as a bedtime ritual. Although my schedule may seem overwhelming, I carefully plan each day in advance, setting SMART goals to ensure I balance work, studies, and personal life while maintaining both productivity and calm. Setting goals for each day helps me break down my responsibilities—life, study, work, and interests into manageable tasks, track my progress, and stay organised. This also ensures that my busy schedule turns each day into a blend of productivity and balance.

As a part of self-care, I begin each day with a moment of gratitude, reflecting on how amazing I’m doing in life and how grateful I am for all the wonderful things and people that have come my way. For me, channelling my thoughts in a positive way is crucial. I practice mindfulness by observing and communicating with my thoughts, which helps me understand and manage them more effectively. This simple practice fills me with positive energy, setting the tone for a beautiful day ahead. As part of my self-care, I engage myself in various other self-care activities that nourish my soul and promote my physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Every Sunday, I go for a long hike in the Adelaide Hills, connecting with nature and finding tranquillity, which helps cleanse my mind, body, and soul from the busy schedule of the week. Saying GOODMORNING (In my jolly voice) to wallabies and kangaroos is a cherished part of this routine. Another key aspect of my self-care is nourishing my body with healthy plant-based foods, every single day. I serve myself a plate full of colourful (I call it rainbow), nutrient-rich foods to fuel my body. Besides that, I attend guided yoga sessions every Friday evening to release all the stress from the week. When I feel overwhelmed or need to clear my thoughts, I pause to take a few deep breaths to regain calm. I make Mandala Art, which is more than just a hobby for me; it’s therapeutic, meditative and helps me enter a state of calm. I also enjoy running, walking, cycling and meditating, all of which are integral to my self-care routine.
Anna Matusi
As a full-time Master of Social Work student in my third semester, I juggle multiple responsibilities, including roles as the Education Officer for FUSWA, Course Representative, and Topic Representative for SOAD 9110. My week involves organising events, engaging with students, and handling a demanding coursework load. Last semester, I completed a 500-hour placement with SA Health, which was both challenging and transformative. On top of that, I have recently volunteered at Oasis Community Markets and helped with the breakfast program at my son’s school. Being a mother to a lively 9-year-old, a wife, and working as a support worker adds to the complexity. Managing all of this requires careful prioritisation and a strong focus on my long-term goals.
Anna – relaxing in nature!
As I navigate my busy life, self-care has become essential. It includes not only the basics, like sleep and healthy eating, but also activities that help me recharge and stay grounded. Music and dance are my go-to ways to unwind, allowing me to disconnect and reset. Whether it’s a walk in the hills or spending time at the beach, nature plays a significant role in my self-care routine, helping me find peace and perspective. I also find fulfilment in volunteering, which reinforces my values and provides a sense of purpose. These practices are vital in maintaining my resilience and effectiveness in both my personal and professional life.
Anne Xi
My schedule is quite packed, balancing life, study, and work alongside my hobbies. I’m currently immersed in my Master of Social Work program, which demands a lot of my time and energy. In addition to attending classes and completing assignments, I’m also involved in practical practice, which give me hands-on experience but require careful time management. Despite the busy schedule, I always make time for my passion for bouldering and outdoor activities. Being part of a bouldering group is not only a physical workout but also a mental escape, helping me recharge and maintain my focus. Participating in StudyAdelaide events is another way I juggle my time, as they provide opportunities to enhance my skills and build meaningful connections.
Anne Xi – bouldering like a pro!
For self-care, bouldering is at the top of my list. The physical challenge helps me release stress, while the friendship with my group gives me a sense of belonging and joy. Spending time in nature, whether it’s hiking or simply being outdoors, is another way I reconnect with myself and find peace. I also value the friendships I’ve formed through various events, as socialising with like-minded people provides emotional support and balance in my life. Self-care for me is about finding moments to breathe and enjoy the simple pleasures of the busyness, whether that’s through physical activity, spending time with friends, or participating in activities that bring me happiness.
