Message about Canvas from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Romy Lawson

Flinders University has decided to make the move from our current Learning Management System (LMS) to a new one called Canvas.

We have been reviewing our LMS for a while now, and we gathered some great feedback from our community along the way.

However, this time we asked a slightly different question.

We explored beyond just the LMS and looked more holistically at the whole learning platform ecosystem, and as a result believe we will get a better overall teaching and learning experience from Canvas.

Canvas is a user-centric platform, aimed at simplifying learning and teaching, and offers 24/7 support to all users. It can be accessed via an app, so you can teach, and students can learn on any device, anywhere. Teaching can occur on Teams thanks to the Microsoft integration and our teaching staff will be able to engage with students in new and exciting ways.

Canvas will be available for teaching and learning from January 2023 and we are managing a staged roll-out.

Our project team will keep you informed along the way and will be available to provide support as we make the transition to our new platform throughout 2023.

We will be contacting you very soon with more detail and look forward to sharing a sandpit environment for you to have a ‘play’ in. We will also be embarking on some roadshows, to highlight what Canvas can do for you. There will be a lot of training and support to get you ‘Canvas ready’ and we are keen to collaborate with staff and students to help inform what this change looks like.

I am excited that we will be enabling benefits that will help us remain competitive into the future and enhance our teaching and student experiences – thank you in advance for your support.

Best regards

Romy
