O’Week success

The campus was buzzing with activity during O’Week, which began with an official welcome by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Andrew Parkin, the Director of Transition Associate Professor Salah Kutieh, and FUSA President Ms Grace Hill. A Welcome-to-Country was provided by Kaurna Elders.

With the support of senior management and under the direction of the Transition Office, O’Week activity has increased, with greet-and-meet activities, tours, games, giveaways and activities to encourage students to find out about the campus. The social centrepiece, the O’Fiesta, was held in the Humanities courtyard on February 27.

The framework for O’Week, set by the Transition Office, has been well-received by staff and student organisations. Activities and events were designed to assist students to engage with the campus and its environs, helping to ensure a successful transition to university.  Every student support service across the campus came out to welcome commencing students and to provide information and advice.

Associate Professor Salah Kutieleh said he was thrilled by the number of students on campus and the carnival atmosphere. ‘It has been fantastic,” he said.

“Attending O’Week is an important step in engaging with Flinders and has been shown to be a predictor of student success. I think O’Week is definitely heading in the right direction. Everyone involved is to be congratulated for their efforts.”
