Farewell George

Members of the Flinders community were saddened to learn of the sudden death of George Kontos over the Easter weekend.

Mr Kontos, widely known on campus simply as either “George” or “Mobile One”, was a familiar face and voice to countless staff and students who he helped at the University during his 37 years of service.

George came to Flinders in 1977 as a junior, beginning work as a clerical assistant in the Mail Room. In 1987 he took up a position as parking inspector, a role in which he combined vigilance with his trademark robust good humour.

In 1996, he became one of the University’s security officers, again bringing his distinctive style and engaging personality to the role. Appointed Emergency Services Officer in 1999, he took on responsibility for liaison with the emergency services.

In 2012, he received a Staff Service Award in acknowledgement of his record of service.

George was an integral part of campus life and will be missed and remembered with great affection by his colleagues, and by many staff, students and visitors to the campus.

  1. Very Sad to hear of George’s passing. In my time of knowing him for some 20+ years he was always very helpful and humorous when ever we crossed paths at University
and I think a lot of people under estimated how difficult a job he had.

Heaven now has a colourful character giving out parking tickets
“listen you cant park there not without a blue permit”
Always made me laugh and put a smile on my face….I will miss our friendly banter.

  3. Not to see or hear George around the place has left a cloud of darkness over the Uni, so many people in Humanities and Creative Arts will miss his jolly ways in Carpark 5.
