Footage of Flinders statue unveiling in London

Direct descendants of the legendary explorer Matthew Flinders gathered at Flinders University Victoria Square on Saturday, July 19, to celebrate the royal unveiling of a commemorative statute that will stand in one of London’s busiest railway stations, Euston.

The bronze life-size statue depicts Matthew Flinders at work over a stylised map of Australia, with his cat Trim.

To celebrate the occasion, exclusive footage of the London unveiling was screened. A YouTube video report on the London ceremony at Australia House can be viewed here.

Special Collections librarian Dr Gillian Dooley is presenting a talk in the History SA and the University of South Australia series Talking History on Matthew Flinders – the man behind the map of Australia in the Drill Hall of the Torrens Training Depot, Kintore Avenue, at 5.30pm on Wednesday, 23 August. Tickets to the free event are available here.
