French visitor to lecture on humour and language

Olivier-BertrandVisiting academic Professor Olivier Bertrand of the University of Cergy-Pontoise and Ecole Polytechnique, Paris, will present a public lecture on ‘Rhetoric, Humour and Persuasion in Mediaeval French (9th-15th centuries)’.

The lecture will be held on Thursday, 28 August, from 6:30pm (refreshments served from 5:45pm) in the Horace Lamb Lecture Theatre at the University of Adelaide.

Family, friends and partners are all welcome.

As part of his visit, Professor Bertrand will also be giving a guest lecture in French the following day at Flinders. He will present ‘Origines et histoire du vocabulaire français’ on Friday, 29 August  at 3.30pm (doors open 3.15pm, refreshments served 4.30pm) in the Noel Stockdale Room, Central Library.

Professor Bertrand’s visit is sponsored by Flinders Institute for Research in the Humanities (FIRtH), and is part of a series of events planned for 2014 and early 2015, exploring the annual research theme of ‘Humour Studies’.
