Optometrist wins Young Achiever Award

FlindTam 2ers optometry graduate Tamra Karolewicz has won the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency Rural Health Award as part of the 2016 Channel 9 Young Achievers Awards, with a $2,000 prize.

Ms Karolewicz graduated with a Masters of Optometry from Flinders in 2014 and moved to the Eyre Peninsula last January to take up a graduate position with Eyre Eye Centre in Port Lincoln after completing a six-week placement in the region.

Ms Karolewicz undertakes fortnightly trips to Ceduna to give eye care to Indigenous communities and people living in remote areas. This year, she aims to implement a new culturally safe eye examination procedure to benefit Indigenous communities, and a school policy to protect children’s vision.
