Mercury rises as Flinders finalists break down walls

Flinders early career researchers Dr Shervi Lie and Dr Justin Chalker have presented on ‘Breaking the Wall of Parasite-induced Blindness’ and ‘Breaking the Wall of Mercury Pollution’ at the prestigious Falling Walls Lab Australia.

Dr Lie and Dr Chalker were among 25 finalists from Australia and New Zealand at the event, which is hosted by the Australian Academy of Science and allows early career researchers to share their research and vision for solving challenging global problems.

Members of the competition jury included Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Alan Finkel, New Zealand’s Chief Scientist Dr Stephen Goldson, German Ambassador Dr Anna Prinz, President of the Australian Academy of Science Professor Andrew Holmes, and Nobel Laureate and Vice-Chancellor of ANU Professor Brian Schmidt.

Dr Lie is a research associate in Opthalmology at Flinders, while Dr Justin Chalker is a lecturer in Synthetic Chemistry.

About the Falling Walls Foundation

The foundation is a not-for-profit organisation based in Berlin, dedicated to the support of science and the humanities. It was established in 2009 on the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Falling Walls Conference and international Falling Walls Labs are opportunities for early careers researchers, entrepreneurs and innovators to show how their discoveries will be used to break down the next wall.
