Flinders recognised at South Australian Spatial Excellence Awards

Flinders staff and students have been recognised in the 2017 South Australian Spatial Excellence Awards, which were celebrated at a gala dinner at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

The annual awards ceremony acknowledges the outstanding achievements of individuals and organisations who are advancing geospatial science in South Australia.

Stephen Fildes, Adjunct Lecturer in the Discipline of Environment, won the Education Development Award.

Stephen has been instrumental in the development of geospatial education at Flinders University, with an emphasis on remote sensing.

Stephen was also responsible for the development of the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma programs in Geographical Information Systems as well as the Masters program in Geospatial Information Systems.

Recent graduate David Phillips won the Spatial Enablement Award for his project that provides the Friends of Sturt Gorge with a web-mapping service that allows them to better manage the Sturt Gorge Recreation Park.

Another recent graduate, Huw Chittleborough, was part of the team who won the Environment and Sustainability Award for their innovative methods of using satellite imagery for land use mapping in the Adelaide Hills and Northern Adelaide Plains.

The Spatial Excellence Awards provide a stepping stone for organisations and individuals to be nominated in the Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards – the only awards event in the Asia-Pacific region that recognises excellence in the surveying and spatial information industry.
