Australian Living Treasure to deliver Southgate Oration

Human rights advocate Julian Burnside AO QC will deliver the 2017 Southgate Oration at Flinders’ Bedford Park campus on 26 October.

The celebrated barrister’s one-hour speech will address how and why Australia is harming refugees.

This 9th annual oration presented by the Southgate Institute For Health, Society and Equity will be held in the Flinders University Health Sciences Lecture Theatre 1.01 at 12.30pm.

In addition to being a passionate proponent of human rights, Julian Burnside is an Australian barrister who practises principally in commercial litigation, trade practices and administrative law.

He was elected an Australian Living Treasure for his tireless work to champion social justice and in 2009 was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for service as a human rights advocate, particularly for refugees and asylum seekers, and for service to the arts and to the law.

In 2004 Julian Burnside was awarded the Human Rights Law Award by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission for his pro-bono legal work for asylum seekers and for his work in establishing Spare Lawyers for Refugees.

In 2007 he received the Australian Peace Prize from the Peace Organisation of Australia and in 2014 he won the Sydney Peace Prize from the Sydney Peace Foundation.
