Health technology the focus of new China partnership

Flinders University’s research collaborations with China continue to expand with the signing of a new agreement with the Shandong Academy of Sciences.

The International Laboratory for Health Technologies will facilitate a joint lab collaboration between the Medical Device Research Institute at Flinders and the Academy’s Shandong Computer Science Center.

The research focus of the lab over the next three years will be the development of:

  • A flexible wearable electronic system to monitor multiple physiological functions including respiration, pulse and electrocardiogram, and blood oxygen
  • Key technologies of intelligent digital medical devices integrating biological sensing, optical monitoring, cloud computing and wireless technologies
  • Health big data key technology
  • Joint PhD programs

The joint laboratory, also supported by the State Government Department of State Development, is the second laboratory established between the Shandong Academy of Sciences and Flinders, adding to the University’s research engagement with China.

Earlier this year, Flinders signed a Memorandum of Understanding to set up a Joint Laboratory of Medical Devices and Digital Health with the Academy in Jinan, Shandong Province.

Yesterday’s signing of the International Laboratory for Health Technologies agreement was attended by the Shandong Academy of Sciences (or SDAS) President Professor Yinglong Wang and Flinders President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Stirling.

Also in attendance were Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Robert Saint; Vice President and Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) Mr Sebastian Raneskold; and Professor Wei Zhang, Professor Karen Reynolds and Associate Professor Youhong Tang from the College of Science and Engineering.
