Science is everywhere: a fresh lens on STEM

The winners of the Cochlear Aurora Photo Contest have been announced during a special awards ceremony hosted by ‘STEM Women Branching Out’ at Alere Function Centre.

The contest was open to all South Australian high school female students, who were invited to take a compelling photograph representing the theme, “science is everywhere”.

The awards ceremony included a presentation by Roger Leigh, Senior Engineering Manager at Cochlear, who was the major event sponsor.

Nine awards were given in three categories, listed below:

Category 1: Years 8-10

  • Annie Lo Basso from Unley High School FIRST PRIZE
  • Imogen Avery from Norwood Morialta High School SECOND PRIZE
  • Anais Mather from Encounter Lutheran College THIRD PRIZE
  • Claudia Mesecke from Emmaus Christian College COMMENDATION

Category 2: Years 11-12

  • Celestine Cherupallil from St Marys College FIRST PRIZE
  • Ellie Turner from Charles Campbell College SECOND PRIZE
  • Deepthi Paul from Emmaus Christian College THIRD PRIZE
  • Athena Saothonglang from Thebarton Senior College COMMENDATION

Category 3: People’s Choice

  • Athena Saothonglang from Thebarton Senior College

About ‘STEM Women Branching Out’

‘STEM Women Branching Out’ is a special group for Flinders women engaged in the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Mathematics (STEM).

The group was founded by Senior Lecturer in Physics, Dr Maria Parappilly, and aims to provide students with:

  • Role model workshops and networking opportunities
  • Support to build self-confidence and leadership skills
  • Exposure to STEM-related careers
