Intervarsity challenge gives Adelaide a run for money

The 2018 SA Challenge was held in May, with Flinders students putting in a stellar performance to bring home three pennants in the annual sports competition and narrowly concede overall victory to the University of Adelaide.

The competition pitched Flinders against the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia in an adrenaline-fuelled battle over two weeks.

Ryan Byrne displayed his exceptional basketball skills.

Week one saw Flinders coming away with first placement in the athletics relay and beach volleyball, together with second placement in ultimate frisbee. The enthusiasm levels and fun factor continued throughout week two, with Flinders staying strong to win another first in basketball, together with second placements in badminton, netball and squash.

Flinders scholarship athletes were prominent throughout the event, leading the way and dominating in their respective sports, including Riley Cocks and Jenna Kelley in the half marathon relay; Aidan Smith and Joel Pillar in the frisbee; Emerson Krstic in badminton; Lauren Aspinall and Mitchell Van Heythuysen in squash; and Casey Goudie in lacrosse.

The event was enormous fun and saw excellent engagement across all three universities.

  • University of Adelaide: 20 points
  • Flinders University: 18 points
  • University of South Australia: 16 points
