Learning from UK’s best

Associate Professor Karen Orr Vered has received a 2019 Endeavour Executive Leadership Award that will see her visit leading UK universities to explore approaches to literacy development and meet with experts in the field.

The award will support a two-month residency at King’s College London, and allow Associate Professor Orr Vered to visit several universities that offer outstanding programs in genre and curriculum-integrated approaches to developing literacy. During the trip she will also meet with Fellows of the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP), a global body and course accreditor for academic English.

As student demand for language and literacy support increases among domestic and international students alike, Australian universities are needing scalable solutions that support successful educational experiences.

Associate Professor Orr Vered’s visit will support her research and professional development to improve students’ critical literacy through reading, reasoning and writing. Her findings will help inform the development of policy and pedagogy for student retention, success and graduate employability.
