Rehab Fellow wins national honour

Flinders University NHMRC-ARC Dementia Research Development Fellow Dr Kate Laver was awarded the 2019 Norington prize from the Rehabilitation Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand (RMSANZ).

Occupational therapist Dr Laver, from the Rehabilitation, Aged and Extended Care research group in the College of Medicine and Public Health, was awarded the prize after presenting the annual Norington Lecture at the annual RMSANZ Scientific Meeting held in Adelaide in late October.

Other Flinders University experts to speak at the October conference included Professor Alison Kitson, Professor Maria Crotty, Professor Sue Gordon, Professor Geraint Rogers, Dr Luke Johnson and Dr Maayken Van Den Berg.

The lecture and prize – presented by an allied health professional – is named in memory of the late Bradney Norington, the first president of the Australian College of Rehabilitation Medicine. It aims to highlight recent progress in allied health research in the field of rehabilitation care.

During his medical studies at Sydney University, Bradney Norington CBE developed acute poliomyelitis and was severely affected with extensive severe residual paralysis restricting him subsequently to a wheelchair-based life. After graduating, he became the first Australian to receive a UK Diploma of Physical medicine and worked extensively in Australia expanding rehabilitation medicine.

Congratulations Professor de Lacey

Professor Sheryl de Lacey

Professor Sheryl de Lacey will contribute her expertise, built on a strong background in ethical and psychosocial issues, primarily around reproduction and paediatrics.

Her knowledge and experience will be valuable in the committee’s leadership of the public consultation currently underway.
