Call for genomics advisory committee

The recently established South Australian Genomics Centre (SAGC) – supporting researchers, clinicians and industry partners through its advanced bioinformatics platform – will be establishing a Scientific Advisory Committee, to help advise SAGC Board and Scientific Director, and is calling for expressions of interest from appropriately qualified researchers.

The SAGC is a partnership between the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), Flinders University, University of South Australia, the University of Adelaide, the Australian Genome Research Facility, and the Australian Wine Research Institute. Its $7 million investment, including $2 million from Bioplatforms Australia, builds the already strong reputation of SA researchers in genomics and bioinformatics and aims to increase collaborations that bring together researchers working in plant and agriculture genomics with those working in biomedical research.

The centre, located at SAHMRI, has welcomed Scientific Director, Professor David Lynn, and Centre manager Dr Sen Wang among its genomics and bioinformatics staff appointments.

The SAGC Scientific Advisory Committee will be selected to provide input and advice to the SAGC Board and Scientific Director on emerging technological and methodological developments in genomics and bioinformatics; to help identify new funding applications that support further development of the SAGC; assist in stakeholder engagement activities; provide input on SAGC capabilities and strategic direction; and advise on best practices in key areas such as clinical genomics, Aboriginal health genomics, agricultural genomics, environmental studies, data and privacy and high performance computing.

The committee membership will be determined by the SAGC Board, and will commit to scheduled two-hour meetings, at least four times a year. The chosen committee members will also serve as ambassadors for the centre, remaining informed about technological advances in the area, potential funding opportunities and seek to connect with relevant collaborators and stakeholders.
