Salute to mental health nursing leader

Professor Eimear Muir-Cochrane is retiring from her impressive career, which includes more than a decade of service and 30 years as an academic.

Professor Muir-Cochrane celebrated with her daughter and colleagues at a special event in Alere Function Centre on 3 February, where many stories about her life and career were shared.

She commenced at Flinders University in 2008, actively contributing to the discipline of mental health nursing through the scholarship of teaching and undertaking funded research into containment of consumers with mental illness.

Professor Muir-Cochrane will maintain her connection with Flinders as Emeritus Professor, which is a deserving award for her leading and excellence in teaching and learning.

Achievements:

  • From 2010 to 2012: Associate Head, Teaching and Learning (the first nurse academic to be appointed) and Chair of the Faculty of Health Sciences Teaching and Learning Committee.
  • From 2012 to 2017: Chair of Academic Senate, appointed by the Vice Chancellor (and the first nurse academic appointed). Her role focussed on the promotion of excellence in teaching and learning across the University during a time of significant curriculum development and innovation.
  • Served on University Council from 2010-2017.
  • Elected as President of the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses in 2017 for a three-year term, concluding this year.
  • 2020, Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Mental Health Nursing Lifetime Achievement Award.
