What you’d need to survive in space

On April 12, it will be 60 years since Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space – which is why Flinders University’s next BRAVE Lecture is covering human interaction with space, in a free public lecture titled Don’t Leave Earth Without It: 10 Objects You Need to Survive in Space.

Presented by Space Archaeologist, Associate Professor Alice Gorman, the lecture reflects on the achievements of space travel – because now we have a tiny outpost of humans orbits over our heads in the International Space Station, and many propose that it’s time for Earthlings to become a multiplanetary species by settling on Mars.

If so, what do we need to survive the rigours of life in space? Based on a study of the International Space Station, Associate Professor Gorman looks at 10 artefacts you shouldn’t leave Earth without. Some of them are things you may already have in your own home.

The free lecture – on Monday, 12 April, from 6pm to 7pm in The Tavern, Level 1, Student Hub, Flinders University Bedford Park – will be followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A session. Drinks and a limited menu will be available at the bar.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, registration is essential and tickets are limited to attend in person. For more details and bookings, visit the Flinders events page.
