PhD scholarship for community program

All children need sport – and some need it more than others, particularly within low socio-economic status communities.

To investigate this thoroughly, the Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation has partnered with The Office for Recreation Sport and Racing, and Flinders University SHAPE Research Centre, along with the City of Onkaparinga to offer a three-year PhD scholarship researching the effect of a new community sport and physical activity program.

Nominations are now open for the Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation PhD Scholarship, for which the successful candidate will research: “The role of a community sport program in a low SocioEconomic Status community”.

Roger Rasheed, an internationally acclaimed professional tennis coach, began his Sport Foundation to help making potentially life-saving impacts through sport with children in extreme disadvantaged communities.

“For these children, the risk of taking the wrong path is always present. Sport is a vehicle for change and that is why we believe in the power of sport.”

The research will investigate and evaluate the role and function of a community sport and physical activity program within a centre being established in the City of Onkaparinga in South Australia. The Centre and its programs will be run by the Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation, which provides community sport and physical activity for children in low SES communities.

The PhD scholarship holder will be based within the Sport, Health, Activity, Performance and Exercise (SHAPE) Research Centre at Flinders University and have SHAPE Director, Professor Murray Drummond, as their principal supervisor.

The three-year scholarship includes a stipend valued at $30,000 per annum and applicants, who have to meet PhD admission requirements, must be available to commence as a full-time PhD student at Flinders University in semester 2, 2021.

Instructions on how to apply for admission can be found at https://www.flinders.edu.au/study/apply/apply-research-degree/how-to-apply

Before submitting applications, prospective applicants are advised to contact the project Lead Investigator, Professor Murray Drummond via email at murray.drummond@flinders.edu.au and the closing date for applications is 20 April, 2021.
