Smoking zones on campus have changed

Fresh Air Zones have been established all around the Bedford Park campus to create a healthier environment for our students, staff and visitors, underlining Flinders University’s standing as a smoke-free organisation.

While most of the campus is a Fresh Air Zone, the University has established several dedicated smoking areas, which are reviewed regularly and sometimes changed or removed to improve the experience for all users on campus.

The designated smoking area that was located near Oasis has now been removed. Please see the updated map for locations of remaining designated smoking zones.

Passive smoking (inhaling cigarette smoke produced by another person) is a known health risk, and Fresh Air Zones ensure that students, staff and visitors to Flinders University are not unwillingly exposed to cigarette smoke.

Efforts to prevent smoking on campus completely are difficult due to unique challenges presented by the University’s Bedford Park campus, with buildings surrounded by bushland, ringed by busy roads, steep terrain and long distances to external roads that prevent smokers from easily moving  ‘off campus’ for a short break. The University recognises that it has to manage these risks while also reducing passive smoke exposure.
