Young artists earn Stobie Pole installations

Three emerging artists from Flinders University’s Visual Arts course have been selected to take part in the second iteration of The Stobie Pole Project that will bring fresh public art to Adelaide’s northern suburbs.

Abby Pumpa, Anna Révész and Ellis Moseley will be creating a series of public artworks to be installed on iconic Stobie poles in the City of Port Adelaide Enfield – and these artworks are expected to remain on-site for at least two years.

The project, a partnership between the Helpmann Academy and SA Power Networks, will engage visual artist Seb Humphreys to mentor the group of emerging creatives on their designs and process. Seb is known for his large-scale mural work and sculptures that explore the intersection of nature and the modern urbanised world.

The Stobie Pole Project will include masterclasses and development of ideas at Post Office Projects Gallery+Studios, to build a close working relationship and strong collaborations between Seb and the selected emerging artists.

Anna Révész is an emerging artist working across several mediums, with a particular interest in photography. “I’m eager to immerse myself in a project that involves public art – to learn more about a site-specific area: about the environment, the people that inhabit or move through these spaces, and the way that art can respond to and perhaps enrich these places,” says Anna.

“Seb Humphreys’ work has always fascinated me. The atmospheres he is able to create through his work is inspiring, and I would love to learn more about how he approaches his visual concepts.”

Abby Pumpa, an emerging artist predominately working with printmaking and drawing, was attracted to the project through her close connection to Port Adelaide. “I’m a local and have lived here my whole life, so I feel a connection to the area and its history. It will be awesome to get to hands-on experience making public art and then being able to tell my Nan about it and have her know the exact spot where it is.”

The SA Power Networks Stobie Pole Project is a partnership between the Helpmann Academy and SA Power Networks and is supported by City of Port Adelaide Enfield and Post Office Projects Gallery+Studios.
