New CFI leader puts spotlight on allied health and ageing collaboration

Professor Kate Laver will drive the development of rehabilitation, ageing and aged care research at the Caring Futures Institute as part of a new joint leadership role with the South Adelaide Local Health Network (SAHLN).

As the incumbent senior leader for this unique research partnership, Professor Laver will deploy her experience as a researcher and occupational therapist to establish a vibrant culture for clinicians and researchers wanting to progress their careers.

The Professor of Allied Health and Active Ageing will support research endeavours that respond to emerging community needs and form partnerships with medical staff and allied health themes.

Professor Laver will engage with industry, government and not-for-profit organisations to establish and grow relationships that support the recruitment of international and domestic higher degree students. She will also foster future fellowships for those students.

“This is an exciting opportunity to work with SALHN clinicians and the community to conduct research that is rigorous and meaningful,” says Professor Laver.

“Health services are changing rapidly to meet the needs of the rapidly growing number of older people. This position provides the opportunity to better integrate research and clinical practice for this population.”

Professor Laver’s research aims to maximise independence and quality of life for older people and people with disabilities. She co-designs, develops, implements and evaluates rehabilitation interventions and new models of care.

Professor Laver’s recent research on modifications older Australians should consider to remain in their homes attracted national media coverage. She commences her new role this month.
