National award win for Flinders author

A book co-authored by Dr Liam Brady, Jakarda wuka (Too many stories): narratives of rock art from Yanyuwa Country in northern Australia’s Gulf of Carpentaria, has won the John Mulvaney Book Award from the Australian Archaeological Association. The award acknowledges the significant contribution of individual or co-authored published books to the archaeology of the continent of Australia, the Pacific, Papua-New Guinea, and South-East Asia. Nominations are considered for books that cover both academic pursuits and public interest, reflecting the philosophy of John Mulvaney’s life work. The book is published by Sydney University Press.

Publication receives presidential recognition

Dr Vijini Mallawaarachchi

A publication from Dr Vijini Mallawaarachchi has won the President’s Award for Scientific Research, the highest research award given to high-impact publications in Sri Lanka. The recognition was for Dr Mallawaarachchi’s bachelor thesis, titled “Change Detection and Notification of Web Pages: A Survey,” published in ACM Computing Surveys (CSUR).

Examining equity thanks to new grant

Dr Rong Zhu

Dr Rong Zhu has been awarded funding from the National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education (NCSEHE) small grants research program for his project “Socioeconomic disadvantages, choice of disciplines, and post-university labour market performance”. Ten projects were selected for funding as part of the program, for a total funding amount of $469,227.

A Fellow of social equity

Associate Professor Kalinda Griffiths

Associate Professor Kalinda Griffiths has been named one of the 2024 Atlantic Fellows for Social Equity. The Atlantic Fellows for Social Equity (AFSE) is a fellowship for Indigenous social equity in Australia, Aotearoa and the Pacific region. Read more about the program here.

Three out of four 

Flinders Medical Device Research Institute (MDRI) has walked away a winner from the recent Australian & New Zealand Orthopaedic Research Society (ANZORS) conference, winning three of the four awards presented at the conference.

Grant to launch international network

Dr Bart Eijkelkamp

Dr Bart Eijkelkamp has been successful in attracting an Amplify Activity Award from the Australian Academy of Science (The Murphy Initiative). Dr Eijkelkamp will lead a team of seven lipid researchers across Australia to develop and launch The Lipid Network in 2024.

The Lipid Network aims to deliver an online platform that facilitates interactivity with and between experts in lipid research across academia, industry, health, and core lipid analysis facilities. Coordinated from Australia, but globally accessible, The Lipid Network seeks to enhance the findability of lipid researchers and the opportunities for research translation, by supporting links with clinicians and industry partners.

Shark conference an international hit

Flinders University recently organised and led the first International White Shark Conference in 13 years. Co-sponsored by Flinders University and organised by the Southern Shark Ecology Group, the conference took place in Port Lincoln in November, and saw 170 scientists, managers, and industry members attend from nine different countries.
