Beware of scams to recruit money mules

The Australian Federal Police is alerting all university students to a new scam involving money laundering, with warnings being promoted through the national Don’t be a Mule Campaign.

Don’t be a Mule Campaign was launched on Monday, 19 February. To announce the nation-wide campaign, a media release was published on the Australian Federal Police website, along with reportage on SBS TV, SBS Mandarin and SBS Hindi to reach a wide group of international students. The campaign will also be translated and delivered in seven languages, including Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, Punjabi, Nepali, Spanish, Vietnamese and Thai.

The Commonwealth Department of Education and Universities Australia will assist with dissemination of the information packs to all universities and students. These packs will include factsheets about how to detect a money mule scam, real life case studies, and information about what to do if you have been affected by this crime.

From 8  March, digital university packs are expected to be distributed via email to students. Being the first week on campus for most students, universities are being asked to print and put up resources around campus, student accommodation, libraries etc.
