New additions to DVCR leadership team

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Raymond Chan is delighted to announce several new appointments in the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Portfolio.

Professor Vincent Bulone has been appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Performance and Impact) to provide strategic leadership for the University’s research performance and impact. Professor Bulone joins the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Leadership Team from the College of Medicine and Public Health where he held the position of Matthew Flinders Professor and Director, Centre for Marine Bioproducts Development from August 2022.

Before coming to Flinders, Professor Bulone was the Director of South Australian Department for Industry, Innovation and Science Research Consortium Program – Agricultural Development Program, which generated $11m, and was Research Director of Fight Food Waste CRC with more than $133m in funding at the University of Adelaide. He was also Director of the $32m Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Plant Cell Walls, and Director of Adelaide Glycomics, a platform for complex carbohydrate analysis that he established in partnership with Agilent Technologies Australia.

Dr Fabiana Santana has been appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Enterprise and Infrastructure), to provide strategic leadership across all facets of the University’s research engagement, knowledge transfer, commercial business development and innovation activities. She comes from the technology industry, having worked at Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and the National Computational Infrastructure at ANU, where she helped government agencies, universities and research organisations define their research and technical strategies, while delivering key projects and partnerships.

Previously, Dr Santana was Head of School, Information Technology and Systems at the University of Canberra and, in Brazil, the Head of the School, Computer Science at the Federal University of ABC. She is an editorial board member of the Elsevier Ecological Informatics journal and contributes to the Biodiversity and Climate Change research community.

Professor Timothy Cavagnaro has been appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Training and Capabilities) alongside the role of Dean of Graduate Research which he has held since July 2023. This new, expanded role will encompass responsibility for providing strategic leadership across all facets of the University’s research training and research workforce development.

Before joining Flinders, Professor Cavagnaro held senior roles in teaching, research and international and industry engagement in both the University of Adelaide’s School of Agriculture Food and Wine and the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology. His exceptional research record in the field of soil ecology focuses on carbon management and sustainability.
