Placing Jane Austen’s music in the international spotlight

Gillian Dooley

Dr Gillian Dooley, Honorary Associate Professor in English Literature, is launching a new book this month – She Played and Sang: Jane Austen and Music. The book highlights how music occupied a central role in Austen’s life, and she made brilliant use of it in her books to illuminate characters’ personalities and highlight the contrasts between them. This insightful work not only uncovers the music closely associated with Austen, but also unravels her musical connections with family and friends, revealing the intricate ties between her fiction and the melodies she performed.

The book launch marks a busy time for Dr Dooley, as she was recently in Mauritius for an event commemorating Matthew Flinders and in England, where she was a guest on BBC 3 weekend program Music Matters, for which Dr Dooley introduced some of the discoveries she made when researching her book, while film critic Lillian Crawford also spoke on the program about the pastiche film scores that have accompanied adaptations of Austen’s novels over the past 30 years.

Currently, Dr Dooley is in India talking at a conference on English Literature, but the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences is planning an event to acknowledge her book release, together with the launch of Associate Professor Eric Parisot’s new gothic novella book.
