‘High’ spirits at opening night triumph!

Rachel High with mum Miriam after the opening night show

Flinders alumna Rachel High celebrated another momentous first, with a inspiring performance at the opening night of ‘High’.

The stage show, at the Space Theatre at the Adelaide Festival Centre, chronicles her life achievements, as she triumphed over discrimination and adversity to prove that people living with disability have rich and fulfilling lives.

From her earliest childhood memories, schoolyard experiences, the solace she took in writing poetry and her achievement as the first Australian living with Down syndrome to graduate with a university degree, Rachel shone on the stage, supported by cast members Fig Kershaw, Kathryn Hall and Quinn.

Slides of Rachel’s poems accompanied by her pre-recorded readings gave their rendering a larger-than-life quality, in contrast to the stage narrative. Rachel’s strength is her physical presence and facial expressiveness, with her wry smile and lifted eyebrow bringing the narrative to life and inviting the audience into her world view.

Writer Sharon Mascall-Dare deftly interwove poetry and performance with dance and fantasy puppetry , giving Director Lisa K Lanzi plenty of opportunity to create a play that’s quite unique. Kudos to set designer Nic Mollison and Stage Manager Grace Calabretto for their creativity and sensitivity, providing a sense of grandeur and affording the actors dignity.

With ”High” teasingly using the tagline “will others’ low expectations become her reality?” the answer is an emphatic NO!
