Flinders continues ARC funding wins

Flinders secured major funding wins across two Australian Research Council (ARC) schemes last week, reinforcing our research leadership and innovation.

In the ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) round, the university achieved its best-ever result, winning seven projects worth $3.67 million in areas including soil and reef health, renewable energy, archaeology and criminology.

With a 25.9% success rate, Flinders outperformed the national average of 13.1%, with seven the highest number of DECRA awards Flinders has ever received in a single round.

Grants were awarded to Dr Craig Liddicoat (CSE), Dr Matthew Evans (CSE), Dr Georgina Wood (CSE), Dr Mirani Litster (CHASS), Dr Melissa de Vel-Palumbo (CBGL), Dr Jake Robinson (CSE) and Dr Ben Lohmeyer (CEPSW).

This success was closely followed by the ARC Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) grant scheme, where three Flinders teams received grants of more than $4 million to explore ancient submerged landscapes, develop materials for a sustainable future and decode the molecular complexity of life.

The ARC LIEF scheme provides funding for research infrastructure, equipment, and facilities to enable cooperative use by universities and industry.

The three projects will be led by Professor Sarah Harmer (CSE), Professor Justin Chalker (CSE) and Dr John McCarthy (CHASS).

The DECRA and LIEF grants follow on from fantastic achievements in the ARC’s Discovery and Linkage schemes, announced in October, when 13 projects were awarded more than $9 million; including the highest amount Flinders has ever received from the Discovery scheme previously.
