Improving the development of babies’ brains
Congratulations to Professor Tim Green, Professor in Nutrition and Dietetics with the College of Health and Enablement, who is part of an international research team awarded USD $1.49 million to investigate thiamine supplementation for improved infant brain development in Cambodia. The funds from the Weiss Asset Management Foundation will launch a major study examining whether enhanced thiamine (vitamin B1) supplementation during pregnancy and early childhood can better support infant brain development. Professor Green has worked in Cambodia for nearly two decades, leading research aimed at preventing Infantile Beriberi, a rapidly progressing and often fatal condition caused by insufficient thiamine in breastmilk.
New directions in health management
Flinders Business School senior lecturer, Dr Madhan Balasubramanian, has worked with health management and other experts from six countries to publish a special issue of the high-profile Health Care Management Review (HCMR). Dr Balasubramanian, Deputy Director of Health and Aged Care Management Programs, is lead guest editor of the focused edition of HCMR which will include nine peer-reviewed articles from Flinders University and other academics who address issues surrounding transdisciplinary approaches in health and aged care management, workforce capability, governance and fiscal systems, digital infrastructure, and social and community engagement in the aged and healthcare sectors.
Dr Balasubramanian and Flinders colleagues are also leading the AI4NCD Innovation Collaborative, partnering with researchers, clinicians, health system leaders and innovators from around Australia and overseas.
Scaling community mental health care
Congratulations to Professor Niranjan Bidargaddi, Professor in Digital Health and Co-director of the Flinders Digital Health Research Centre, on winning a $3 million Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) National Critical Research Infrastructure grant for – AutoReview: A smart, scalable Community Mental Health Care program.
Building on an award-winning AI platform, Professor Bidargaddi and his team will develop AutoReview to assess mental, physical, and social health care gaps to accurately identify review needs. The tool will help case managers, clients and carers, efficiently develop and track viable care plans with registered providers.
