Updates from the Flinders Medical Students’ Society (FMSS)

FMSS would like to acknowledge the Kaurna people, the original custodians of this land, and recognise the relationship between Indigenous people and the lands and waters of the Adelaide Plains, on which we learn and grow every day.

FMSS and AMSS recently joint hands to host our first Lawn Bowls events. Coming together in this friendly (and competitive!) environment created a wonderful sense of collegiality and togetherness between future colleagues from two different universities. We are so proud of the positive relationship formed between the two medical schools in South Australia, secondary to the amazing initiative and dedication demonstrated by our committee members. Too often surrounded in textbooks and lectures, we forget how lucky we are to be in a career involving so much collaboration and team work, focused on a common goal of providing individualised, holistic patient-centred care. Integrating with our future colleagues, outside of an academic and clinical space, facilitates the development of rapport, cooperation and partnership, integral to our future practice.

To further our culture of positive integration and collegiality, this year FMSS hosted our first full committee dinner. Evident through all our initiatives this year, activities to support team building and vertical integration has been at the forefront of our executive committee’s agenda. Our committee dinner was such a wonderful opportunity to come together, reflect, and celebrate all that we have achieved as a motivated, dedicated, hardworking volunteer group, over a delicious three-course feast at the Hispanic Mechanic!

Our ongoing strive to contribute to local communities is evident through our participation in the City-Bun fun run. Participants ran 6 km, 12 km or half marathon distances to support The Purple House, an Indigenous-owned and run health service operating from its base in Alice Springs, the Northern Territory. The team raised a total of $1, 108.25! We are grateful to all those participated, and thank you to everyone who donated to support this wonderful cause.

We are truly about to finish the year in style. Some of the biggest events in our calendar yet to come, including our Annual General Meeting, electing next year’s FMSS executive and senior committee, Med Ball 2022 and Med Revue! We can’t wait to share the details of all these events with you soon.
