Flinders University 3MT Final 2023

The Flinders University 3MT competition has come to an end with a very exciting University Final on Friday the 8th September 2023. Our six finalists gave it all they had, making the judges’ jobs very difficult in picking a winner. You can view all of the presentations online on the Flinders 3MT website.

A big thank you to our judges, who volunteered their time to provide their expertise in picking a winner and runner up.

University Final Judging Panel:

  • Professor Tim Cavagnaro, Dean of Graduate Research, Flinders University
  • Dr Chelsea Mauch, Research Program Manager, Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation
  • Ms Claire Jackson, Executive Director, The Wee Consultancy

All six presentations were outstanding, making the competition very tight, but the judges did a great job (0.25 points at a time) to pick our winner and runner-up. The live and online audience also did a smashing job picking the People’s Choice award, with a whopping 191 votes in 20 minutes. Congratulations to the winners below, and all our finalists.

University Winner
Vinicius Guedes Goncalves de Oliveira, College of Business, Government and Law, ‘Attention, this is not science fiction! Assessing Australia’s space infrastructure security’

University Runner-up

While the 2023 Flinders 3MT has now concluded, Vinicius will now progress to the 2023 Virtual Asia-Pacific 3MT Competition, where he will represent Flinders University. There are 56 competitors in the Asia-Pacific Semi-Final and the online showcase is available now. We wish Vinicius all the best in this stage of the competition and hope he will be selected in the final 8!

We would like to extend our thanks to all of this year’s competitors and judges. The competition has been an incredible showcase of our amazing HDR students and the incredible, ground breaking research they are undertaking. The experience and skills developed go far beyond the competition itself,  with this year’s 3MT competitors already using their presentations to help apply for scholarships, enter other 3MT competitions and share their research with international collaborators. We could not be prouder of you all and wish you every success in the next stages of your research.

We hope you will consider joining in the 2024 competition as a competitor, judge or as part of the audience. In fact, registrations for the 2024 competition are open now!
