Short summary of your poster/research

From a home language maintenance and development (HLM & D) perspective, the current study investigates the current situation of HLM & D among Chinese families in Australia. Based on Spolsky’s Language Policy Framework as a theory, the research collects quantitative and qualitative data using online surveys and semi-structured interviews from people with Chinese backgrounds. The findings indicate that at the micro level, Chinese families have a supporting HLM & D language policy. However, they do not experience a supportive language policy at the meso and macro levels. Statistical analysis illustrates that the language policy at three social levels is interconnected.

What was a highlight of the conference?

A standout feature for many, including myself, was the digital poster presentations in the concourse. It was an inspiring highlight that allowed HDR students to build our research network, showcase our PhD projects, and encourage other candidates to make themselves visible.

What are the key takeaways you’ll bring back to your studies?

A primary personal takeaway is that doing a PhD is not a “solo journey”. The conference reinforced the importance of building a research network, proactive visibility and essential “soft” skills that go beyond research knowledge.

 

What is something fascinating about your research?–

One of the most fascinating aspects of my research is the discovery that external support from the meso and macro levels have relationships with the beliefs, use and management of the home language at the micro level.
