Do you have strong opinions – good, bad, and everything in between – about the current costs of publishing and accessing research? Do you have any publishing stories to tell? Or are you just interested in learning more about how Open Access works?  

We want to hear from you. 

The Library is seeking expressions of interest from HDR students to feature in a live podcast event on Monday, October 19, as part of Open Access Week 2026: “The Cost of Knowledge”. 

The rising cost of academic publishing is a critical topic and impacts all of us differently. We’ll be hosting the discussion and providing a structure, but the event will be ultimately shaped by your perspectives, and by the topics that matter most to you. 

You might be asking: 

• Do I need to know a lot about publishing? 
  Absolutely not. The vibe will be cozy, authentic, and conversational; we’re looking for personal stories and genuine interest rather than studied expertise. Some experience with Open Access is helpful for you, but not a prerequisite. 

• What do I get out of it? 
  This is a unique opportunity to connect with both the Library and your HDR community, and to learn more about the ins and outs of Open Access. Also, free donuts! 

• What if I don’t want to be a speaker, but I still want to come? 
  That’s fine too! We also need an audience. Keep an eye on the Library blog for more news about Open Access Week.
